Our current patients will naturally have questions on orthodontic treatment during the Covid-19 pandemic, including our plans to reopen.

Until the health authorities and professional bodies agree reopening is possible, the information below should help with your core concerns:

How do I decide whether I need an emergency appointment?

Issues with braces can crop up whilst undergoing orthodontic treatment, although most are minor and will not compromise the progression of your treatment.

You may have been given advice on dealing with them when your braces were fitted. If you are unsure, The British Orthodontic Society produce a range of videos on self care.

If however, you are experiencing a high level of pain, or discomfort, you should contact us Via This Email Link, or on 0739 185 6009.

Can I have a telephone/video consultation with an orthodontist?

Can I have a telephone/video consultation with an orthodontist?

With the government and health authorities instructing us to stay at home where at all possible, this may be a good solution. Please use the email link above to request a video consultation.

There’s a fair chance of a solution which saves you travelling to Harley Street, or if need be, understanding how best we can help at the clinic and when this should be.

Will my treatment be prolonged if I cannot see my orthodontist?

The length of treatment is unique to each patient and dependent on the type of brace, whether extractions have been carried out, or the stage you are currently at.

Even so, we would rather be clear and state that a proportion of patients will require longer term treatment, due to coronavirus restrictions. One way to minimise this is to care for your teeth and braces.

How do I look after my braces, to prevent the need for urgent care?

Looking after your braces will reduce the need for emergency appointments and lessen increases in treatment duration. A high standard of oral hygiene is important, along with avoiding breakages, or tooth decay:

  • Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard sweets, mints and sugared chewing gum.
  • Cut up food such as apples, carrots, or crusty bread before eating.
  • Avoid sugary snacks, or drinks, especially between meals, or at bedtime.
  • Avoid fizzy, diet, or sports drinks, or large amounts of fruit juice.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes, with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Rinse once at a separate time, with alcohol free, fluoride mouthwash.

These choices will make a difference. If you do still have an accident with your braces, or discomfort, don’t forget to review the BOS videos for useful tips.
